Great site on Partition magic!

One thing, on the bottom it says upgrade can be found to PQ7 and a link, no more I guess, PQ8 only?

Why Partition Magic 8.0 doesn't see my USB hard disk? It only sees the internal HD of the laptop. Thanks

If you want an answer to a question, you have to provide an email address. Michael.

I have version 8.02 and since I had to reformat, my serial number no longer works. Symantec has been NO help in the situation. They gave me a new serial number that does not work. I am affraid since PartitionMagic is in the hands of Symantec it will only get WORSE! I'm going with Partition Commander.

It's ashame, I spent a lot of money on PartitionMagic only to be kicked to the curb.

I've been using Partition Magic on and off for a number of years now, (being the resident geek) genernally only on the rare occasion that I need to help some of family members solve computer problems.

This particular problem involved someone who had created a backup/restore partition using the IBM software that came with her laptop. Later on, realizeing she never used it, she wanted to restore the backup storage to her primary parition. In order to solve this, I merged it back into the primary.

Partition Magic said that it would leave a directory with all the data from the secondary partition on the primary. This worked, however after copying the data out of the directory, all that it contains is the 'System Volume Information', which cannot be moved/deleted. Now there is an essentially empty directory in the root of the primary partition which windows will not allow me to delete.

Although it is not a critical problem, I wonder if there is any way to delete this directory.

Any help is appreciated,

master@cafe-espresso.org

Thanks

I also had an error 1518, BUT I RECOVERED, YEAH. I'm running windows XP and was shrinking a partion. I followed the instructions for 1516, booted the windows XP install disc, went into recovery mode where I was able to run chkdsk. On the next powerup, partition magic redid the partion resize and got it correct. Everything seems to be working OK.

Someone previously posted: "I upgraded to Partition Magic 8 and today tried to use it to merge two partitions on my new notebook's hard disk. Everything seemed to go as planned, but after
rebooting, not only weren't the two partitions merged, the data was gone from the partition I had wanted to merge into the other. When PM8 merges two partitions, it asks you to name a folder on the merge-into partition into which it will deposit all the files from the merge-from partition. I did this. PM8 did make this folder, but it didn't deposit any data into it. So, in effect it erased my data from the merge-from partition and didn't copy/move it to the merge-into
partition". April 3, 2004.
This exactly what happened to me. I'm trying to look through the documentation, but not finding any information. - Rob Erwin sweet.lover@gmail.com

On Answers to the following:

USB on a laptop.
1. USB on a laptop is usually underpowered or USB 1.0/1.1 which Partition Magic isn't designed to work with. On my newer DELL Laptop it works great. My older P4 2.2 Sager laptop never works unless I have a separate powersupply.

2. PowerQuest is a bunch of untrained idiots - espacially since Symantec purchased it. You can fix the 15XX errors can be solved with the following things.

2.a. Run from the command or cmd prompt at the root i.e. c:\, d:\ of the drive haveing difficulties without quotes 'compact /u /s /i /q'
In fact, do that on every drive before you do anything.

2.b. Next from the command / cmd prompt run 'Chkdsk /f'. Get it to run on a restart for best results.

2.c. Repete Steps 2.a and 2.b.

I would recommend you do that on any drive you are going to shrink expand or otherwise mess around with. Also note, Partition Magic 8 has less errors with 15xx than do previous versions. It's best to stick with the 8 and above.

Since upgrading to WinXP service pack 2, I can no longer make rescue disks with Parititon Magic 7. Something causes the program to see blank floppy disks as being either full or unformatted. This happened on two different computers. If I didn't have an older disk made before the update, I wouldn't have a way to run the program from DOS in an emergency. And PM (version 7) recently messed up one of my disks when it hung while trying to move a partition before resizing. I lost all data, which luckily was not crucial stuff. I'm now afraid to use it on my SP2 computers.

I also had an error 1516.
I have dual boot , WinXp and Fedora. Grub allows to select the system.

With Partitions magic 8 I resized linux partitions and e and d in order to increase C partition. Then I moved D partition to allow for contiguos unallocated space to C. The process didnot end because it was not possible to boot XP. PM rescue diskettes detected error 1516 in C. Finally it was solved with A:>Fdisk/mbr.

I recently put together a system with twin Western Digital 160Gb drives. I loaded Windows 2000 Pro on C drive and used Partition Magic 7.01 to split the two drives into 4. Drive D was dedicated to my Audio collection whichh consisted of 4500 mp3 and 2500 wav files. 2 months after transfering all those files drive D reported that it was not formatted. Is there anything that can be done to recover these files? Your input would be greatly appreciated.

OkI run XP Home Sp2 and using Partition Magic 8.0. I was using PM to copy the partition from disk one(160 GB) to empty space on disk 2 (400GB) Disk 1 is or was my bootable partition. Windows had to reboot to perform the operation, operation was about to start when PM gave error message something like "cannot read batch file, check that file is not on a compressed drive (or maybe that file is not compressed)" ok then puter reboots again but now it gets to the screen with light blue background with the small XP logo on it (just before screen that has user account on it) and it sticks there for good. Normally you would see immediately after logo appears small white font scrool under it saying "windows is now starting". All I was doing was COPYING my boot partition not doing ANY changes to it. I had to boot up using a copy of XP Pro that is installed on the same partition in a different directory and it boots up fine but all of my installed software and setting are on the other install that won't boot up. Anyone have any suggestions? Scott Carlisle jwscotterz@hotmail.com

I need some help. When I was trying to merge 2 partitions a bunch of data came up missing. Some music I had written to the Partition I was trying to merge disappeared as well as some other large files. I hadn't backed up this data (stupid me)...I wonder where it went. Any help would be appreciated. (I searched for these files to no avail in any folder on any hard drive.

Frel Partition magic! I also have a USB hard drive which I mistakenly formatted (from FAT16 to FAT 32. PM can't see it. Even though I moved PM 8.0 to the drive, it apparently can't even see where it's located!

PTEDIT32.EXE, part of PM, can see disk 2. Apparently it either won't pass along the information or PM.exe doesn't care.

As far as Symantec is concerned, perhaps aquiring software rights should be the way it is supposed to be when you have pets or children; if you won't take care of them, then you should return them or give them to someone who will.

Have seen partition magic 8.02 with of course your c drive and a 2nd partition of about 10 gb created off it for exe. file storage etc.
Then load acronis true image 8, leave an aconis image on the 2nd pm created small drive.
computer will run good for maybe a day or few days then simply sit a dos type screen nostrkrnl(maybe I didn't spell quite correct) error or such.
Previous to the "disablement" if one looks in the event viewer it lists disk problems controller issues in red.
You can test your disc, with manufacturers software till the 3rd coming of the man above it shows absolutely NO issues.
Leave partition magic as above off (of course you wiped your drive and reloaded everything onto 1 c drive now)then load acronis 8 and no issues ever!
You can even use the acronis secure zone (which in itself is a "hidden" partition.
store your images there and NEVER get event viewer warnings or anything in fact going wrong.

I ran into an Error 1518 while resizing my windows partition. Then my computer rebooted and it just didn't work...no matter if I chose safe mode or whatever...It would stop in the middle of the windows loading screen. I got wise and I popped in the windows recovery cd and ran chkdsk, which found some errors and fixed them. I turned off the pc completely. Then I booted again and PM tried to do its resize again but I cancelled it before it took off. Windows was happy (and so was I)and loaded correctly. At this point, I think I'll play it safe and back up my data. My advice, do the same since PM seems to have mood swings.

Anonymous said...

You can't resize or add free space to a partion on which the program is installed. What is the point then? The error message reads something like, "run program from disk or another drive."

I got this program a few hours ago and I have been trying to change my portable hardrive from ntfs to fat32 and I have no idea how to do this. I read the help file over and over. Tride various methods and the program still does nothing no matter what I do. Applying changes seems to do nothing. It ask me to do things in some mysterious boot mode I have never heard of. What is boot mode? Does that mean restart in the boot menu? It doesn't do anything if I do that. It does not do anything period. I don't care about losing files I just want to convert and thats it.

The only reason I got this is because dos command cannot convert ntfs into fat32 because that operation is unavailable on my computer.

Someone please tell me how this program works. I beg.

Solution to Creating Rescue Diskettes!

If you boot WinXp in Safe Mode, you do not get the space error of 1.457000 space needed to create these diskettes.

You can create all the rescue diskettes that you desire!

This Works also on DI 2002 as well.

I got Partition Magic 8.0 to fix a problem I have with XP. I have the disks for XP but it is pre SP2 and only will allow a maximum of 130Gig per disk and I have 160Gig disks. Once I load XP I download all fixes to become current and that loads SP2. I then run Partition Magic to get a C drive with 160 Gig (using the entire disk rather than having a 20 or so Gig drive hanging out there that would never get used). What bugs me is that Partition Magic creates a folder (you name it) and once the repartition occurs you can not delete this folder. So you have a folder with nothing in it that you can not delete. If PM truly extends the partition and does not ‘fake’ it then why can I not delete this file? Very Frustrating

I been using partition magic successfully on many occasions for years. Versions 4 thru 8. I cant understand why you users want support for its use. All the functions that partition magic does are self evident. Bit like buyimg an electric drill and complaining that it does not do the DIY for you. Can believe that users sometimes get problems it cannot fix but it solves a useful set of problems.

"After reading this web page someone emailed me their gripe with Partition Magic 8. I have no way of verifying this. They said:

Update: This was confirmed by another reader of this page."

I have the exact same problem. I guess there is no way to retrieve my data?

Windows XP. PM8/8.01 fails to complete disk partition modification. Gives error "Can't write to BOOT Sector".
The problem seems to be Norton GoBack! By deleting GoBack, PM 8.01 worked correctly.

I have previously mreged two drives in partition magic 7

I tried merging two drives in my 160gb HDD PATA .. namely D: and F:

it asked me to create a folder to copy the F: drives files...

it started the operation ... an error showed up
it did create a file and nothing inside it.... now after rebooting it shows that F: disk as a free space .. the D: is still intact..

But where did all my data on my F: drive go ??? ..
whn i click on it it says "needs to format the drive" ...

then after doing that i assigned a new drive letter G: ..

after rebooting i was in for another surprise..
ALL THE LOGICAL DRIVES WERE DELETED AND ONLY THE PRIMARY PARTITION WAS THERE AND THE REST WAS SHOWN AS FREE SPACE ... ??

WHERE DID MY 120 GB OF DATA GO ???
for an hour i thought my life is ruined ...

Solution :

I used Virtual Lab data recovery .. but that was a trial edition and no crack available as yet ..

then i used PARTITION TABLE DOCTOR 3.5
it was able to recover my other partitions (took a long time)... but not the F: drive the one which was supposed to be merged with D:

after the recovery of the other drives the my past D: of 30 gb was shown as free space and was asking me to format it again ..

i used another S/w named
Active@ partition recovery ... was not able to recover my Drive..

then made a DIM image of the drive and used the sister S/w of Active@ partition recovery called Active@ FILE recovery
was able to recoer 5-6 gb of my precious data ..

REST IS R.I.P ...
thanks to partition magic..

moral of the story .. pl back up before doing anything related to HDDD ...

another update... this is me again ..
dumdum6@gmail.com

i was able to recover all my deleted files using the same program named
Active@ file recovery for windows

even the data which was deleted few years ago!!!.. hee hee

the main thing is that even if ur data is lost or disappeared ..
1. DONT PANIC...
2.data is still there and it is not visible...
3.dont fill that drive with some other data ... as it may overwrite ur old invisible data ..

4.dont use windows chkdsk utility
till u recover the data... as it may alter the data...

5. if the drive is not accessible u might want to do a quick format ..

6 use some data recover software and recover u r date.. precious data ..

although it may take a really long time... like a day or so ..
its worth it.. if ur data is so important..

Hi
I used partition magic 7 and intended to make a new partition from some of my unused space from my C: partition. I made three things for the program to redo. It restarted my computer and upon booting, proceeded to complete the resizing of my disk. From there it wanted to move some data to a different part of the disk so that it could make the new partition at the beginning of my HDD. From there it hung and locked up. I restarted and could not start windows. I used an old program my dad had bought in 2003 or so called Partition recovery (i think) and i managed to get my data back to some extent. When windows booted and logged in, i got a BSOD (blue screen of death). I ended up running checkdisk and it managed to fix some errors with files on my drive. However, I have music files stored away which i assume the program attempted to move. They now are unusable as well as some of my documents. Some work some don't. They just don't open or anything. Any hints or tips on which program to use to fix these files up? or have i just lost those files?

I have had PM.8 on CD since its launch and booted from this into rescue mode (DOS) on startup, like a floppy

Now when I try it starts as normal then I get a message "Internal Error Code 006" and a drive letter "Y".

I can access PM okay in Windows but would like to work in the DOS window as before.

Any help on this gratefully received, as none on Symantic website!!

I solved the "not enough free space on the rescue diskettes" problem. When the dialogue box for the A drive comes up, don't click on OK. Click on Browse, then click on the A drive in the next window.

error 10121 init failed. I got this error after PM8 failed to merge two partitions. The only work around at this point is to disconnect the drive that 'failed' and fdisk and format it at a DOS level. (PM will work when the culprit drive is disconnected.) I suspect there is a better way by manipulating the partition table (PTEDIT) but don't know how just yet.

I used PM7 to move 6 empty GB from drive D to C.
PM released the 6GB from D and made it an empty partition. No problems to here., Then when I tried to move the 6gb and add it to C it froze up during the execution..
booted into windows fine.. but now D is gone. cant access it.
Windows doesnt see D at all, says its not a logical drive. PM sees it but wont let me do anything with it but delete it.. I cant delete it because ALL my data is on it. Please help :(

I have HD 60G and 4 partitions on it: C:(Primary), D:,E:,F:(Extended) with Windows XP installed on C:. I installed Partition Magic8.0 on E: and tried to enlarge C:, using free space from E:. Everything passed OK, but when it asked to reboot computer - WinXP didn't up anymore - it stucked on black screen with white line below. Meantime I accesses to HD (HD led), but it already 10 hours in such state. What to do now? Any suggestions?

The note about the seek error was very helpful. I had the same problem - partition magic was running and I wandered off and when I came back and rebooted I couldn't boot. Had a tonne of trouble with the boot disks and when I finally got into the partition magic program from disk it was pretty useless. All it would tell me about the c: drive was that there was a "seek error" 46, with no way to fix it or even suggestions. Fortunately I have another computer and was able to google it and found the reference here. Running chkdsk /r on the c: drive after booting from the XP disk into the recovery console worked perfectly and I am back up and running.

Problems with Partition Magic...

I recently (half an hour ago) fell into the same trap, as many of previous posters, trying to merge two partotions and ended up losing access to the merged one.

Intensive googling for the keywords in my uttermost desperation and furious anger (contence of merged folder was nearly irreplaceable) brought me finally to following piece of information:

Sorry if this is a repeatition... didn't read all posts though.

Hi Anyone,

I'd like to know how to access my G drive partition, after attempting to Resize (enlarge) my C partition by moving space from G to C. I got message that read something like. "Partition magic needs to restart your PC..." It did so, then aborted.

And when I restarted my PC, it no longer recognised the G drive. I re-entered Partition Magic to see what was happening. The partition type had gone from a FAT32 and is now a 'PqRP'.

There is no 'PqRP' in the help index of my version of P Magic 8.0. Is there a fix please? I would be most grateful for some wise advice.
